The British Library houses the world’s most important collection of books and manuscripts, including such outstanding items as the Lindisfarne Gospels, Magna Carta, the Gutenberg Bible, Shakespeare’s First Folio and the world’s oldest printed book, the Diamond Sutra. It also contains many modern cultural treasures, including the original manuscript of Alice’s Adventures Under Ground and Jane Eyre. The British Library Souvenir Guide introduces these and many other treasures from the collection – including illuminated manuscripts, historical documents, maps, literary and music manuscripts – which can be seen on display in the Library’s exhibition spaces.
